English POV Program

This program is designed to support the growth of English-language point of view (POV) documentaries. This program is part of the Canada Media Fund’s (CMF) Convergent Stream; thus, projects funded through this program must include content to be produced for distribution on at least two platforms, one of which must be television and the other, digital media. Funding from this program is allocated according to a selective process, using an evaluation grid.

A total of 14 documentaries received $5.5M. The program budget was increased in 2018-2019 and was fully spent. The average television project budget rose to a five-year high of $792K. 12 projects were feature-length and two were one hour in duration. Regional projects received 47.0% of funding in 2018-2019. English POV Program projects received an additional $1.1M from the Performance Envelope Program and regional incentives.

A wide range of broadcasters triggered English POV program projects in 2018-2019 including APTN, CBC, Documentary Channel, Ethnic Channels Group, Knowledge, The Movie Network,  OUTtv, Radio-Canada, RDI and TVO.

CMF contributions to POV television financing declined slightly this year to 48.5% compared to last year’s 52.2%. Foreign financing of television projects provided 1.5% (in the financing of three projects). Two projects were treaty co-productions with Ireland and the UK. Broadcasters and producers contributed to a higher average budget in 2018-2019.
